History
The Optimist Club of Louisville has been in the forefront of civic activities since 1916. When the parent body was formally established at the first convention in Louisville, Ky., June 1919, we became a charter member of Optimist International. Today we are in the Kentucky-West Virginia District.

Our Club is comprised of people who care enough to volunteer a portion of their time and talent... simply to help others. Committed to the international motto, Friend of Youth, club leaders determine the service programs we undertake--some developed by Optimist International, others tailored by us to meet local needs.

Each year we sponsor Scholarship Awards, Youth Appreciation, an Oratorical Contest for middle school students, an Essay Contest for high school students, Tri-Star Basketball, and Respect for Law. Additionally, we frequently offer golf tournaments for youth, a fishing derby, an oratorical contest for hearing impaired students, and in 2003 we staged our first Website Design Contest. To recognize outstanding citizens, we celebrate a Citizen of the Year who is given the privilege of donating a large award to the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Citizen of the Year
In April 2003, Kevin Greenwell, a top teacher for junior golfers who is head golf pro at Shawnee Golf Course, became our Citizen of the Year. Below, Walter Barney who heads up the COY program, congratulates him. Last year's COY was Jarrett Mynear, a cancer patient (now deceased), who initiated a program called the "Joy Cart" to bring toys and surprises to children who must endure long periods of hospitalization.
